The Pey-a-ton problem

So today as things press on in Indianapolis, a lot of people in the NFL media are covering the story of Peyton Manning in the Colts organization.

Here is my two cents.

First off if you are not a Colts fan you have to understand, Peyton is the franchise. Packers fans are the closest to Colts fans as of right now. Basically they were married to a quarterback, so are the Colts. When you marry a quarterback it always comes back to bite you, and people forget "Professional" Sports are different then backyard, you do have to make decisions in Professional sports.

The thing is, all things change. You need to evolve to grow in the NFL, look at the Panthers, they are a couple of defenders away from Playoffs, say that two years ago and people would laugh at you, but Cam Newton changed the culture within one year. Peyton is a proven winner in this league, take him out of the Colts equation, they are a one-legged hoarse in the Kentucky Derby.

The way things are set up everything would work out for the Colts, I mean right now you have teams that need a QB (and who wouldn't want Peyton Manning?), Andrew Luck is coming out a college, and the Colts have the number one pick. Could the Colts have coexisting quarterbacks within their team, probably, but the way the NFL has set up rules for the quarterback to be the star of the league, and you are getting basically a starting playoff quarterback, who is healthier than Peyton, and use to winning like Peyton who are you going to take?

Let's also look at the business aspect, Peyton at the beginning of the year signed a huge 69 million dollar contract, and then he wasn't healthy, they paid him 16 mill in the beginning of the 2011-2012 season, as retribution to his Colts career, lets not forget the Pollians were still in the office too, it was also a risk for a 50/50 shot of him coming back (and if you give Peyton a half a season he might get you to the playoffs). Peyton wasn't ready to come back at all this season and the Colts won....Count them two games. Jim Irsay, the Colts owner, didn't really like the fact that he married a QB, and he wants the new guy coming out of College. So, what do you do, keep the quarterback who has won you a championship, and have risk/reward for another three years while not winning a championship, or take a piece that has some of the aspects you like about Peyton, but some other pieces that you could build around, you be the judge.

The thing is people will want Peyton Manning on their team. He isn't done in the NFL and he might be able to win, with a team other than the Colts, a Super Bowl. I personally like Peyton, he is one of the reasons I am a Colts fan, and I thank him for giving other players that the world doesn't really know about (Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, or former Colts Tyjuan Hagler and Bob Sanders) a super bowl ring. As a Colts fan you shouldn't look down on Jim Irsay, or Peyton, or anyone, look to the future and the possibilities that that team has.
Just look back at the good times and say "Hey Peyton Manning, a class act, and the best of his time, in Indy".
